CAPE TOWN

Cape of Good Hope

Even though our first day in Cape Town was cloudy and foggy and misty, we decided to brave the elements and visit the Cape of Good Hope national park. Even in the misty weather it was totally beautiful. In fact, some of the low-lying mist gave the whole place a rather magical feeling.

    V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a mixed-use destination located in the oldest working harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. With Table Mountain as its backdrop, the 123-hectare site welcomes millions of visitors each year to enjoy its shopping, restaurants, bars, craft shops and loads of outdoor entertainment.

We were fortunate to be there on the last day of the WOMAD festival and able to see some fun music. A standout act was the “Congo Cowboys” who had the crowd up and dancing!

    Boulders Beach

We stayed in Simons Town which is just near Boulders Beach - famous for its penguin colony. We could actually hear the penguins from our balcony!

    Chapman's Peak

Chapman’s Peak Drive is a scenic coastal drive between Noordhoek and Hout Bay and is one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world. It is a toll road of 9km of breathtaking beauty with 114 twists and turns of the road following the cliff face above the crashing waves below. And it’s one of the best places in Cape Town to see the sun set.

Able Seaman “Just Nuisance” - a Simons Town legend!

This is a statute of the four legged Able Seaman “Just Nuisance”…

“Just Nuisance”, as the dog was to become known, was by all accounts born on Thursday, 1st April 1937 in Rondebosch, a suburb in the south peninsula of Cape Town.

At an early age, the pup was sold to Benjamin Chaney who moved to Simon’s Town to run the United Services Institute (USI). The USI was frequented mainly by the Royal Navy sailors as the Royal Navy at that time was in charge of the Simon’s Town Naval Base. This Great Dane soon grew to be a massive dog and it was in Simon’s Town that he was to become a legend.

He was a very friendly dog and as such was treated to all sorts of titbits, pies and beer by the sailors who loved him and to whom the dog in turn took a great liking, especially as they would often take him for walks and as such, he considered that all sailors were his friends. He recognised his matelot mates by their bell-bottom trousers and square blue collars – they all looked pretty much the same to him, so every sailor was his friend! Servicemen in a different type of uniform were normally given the ‘by-pass’.

He started following them around and that led him to the naval base and dockyards and eventually onto the ships moored alongside, with HMS Neptune being one of his favourite vessels. His favourite spot was to lie on the deck on the brow at the top of the gangplank. No one could easily get past him and he was loathed to move. The sailors would say – “You’re just a nuisance, why do you have to lie here of all places?!” – and that’s how he got his name.
