Gill and Chris in Africa 2024

Gill and Chris in Africa 2024Gill and Chris in Africa 2024

On arrival at Windhoek airport, we picked up our hire car and headed towards Windhoek and our accommodation for the night.

Our first night's accommodation, Capbon Guesthouse, was not far from downtown Windhoek. This gave us time to do some supermarket shopping and then have a decent night's sleep before our "grand tour" begins.

We were lucky to be able to book a family room which consists of 2 separate bedrooms with a shared bathroom. After the long flights we've both had, it's nice to have a separate bedroom for the first night's good sleep!

Next morning, the first task for the trip was a supermarket visit to stock up on essentials.  Water is one of the main items we need and we buy it in huge 5 liter containers and then use these to fill our water bottles. It's going to be HOT for the next couple of weeks so water is a priority.

Then we hit the road to head  north.  The road from Windhoek towards the north is one of the few bitumen roads in Namibia.  Some might say it's boring but for those who are observant, the desert scenery changes almost every 10 minutes and you are always on the lookout for animals.

Aloegrove Safari Lodge was the next stop on our itinerary. What a fabulous place! Set on top of a mountain with sweeping views over the plains below. The owners of the lodge also care for several orphaned animals including a leopard, cheetah and lioness. They are also home to several giraffes and various species of antelope. In the late afternoon we went on a "safari drive" with the owners of the place to see some of these animals.
